Alex's Notes

Countries with ancient history have always captured my heart. Hence my elation, when Todd Ney (my travel guru) gave me the thumbs up after years of checking on Greece. From Athena's wisdom, the courage of Leonidas' 300 Spartans, to the teachings of St. Paul, classical and mythical Greece came alive for me on my 2007 visit. This time it's going to be even better.

Classical & Mythical
History comes alive on our guided exploration of Greece's ancient sites. Visit the Acropolis, dating back to the 5th century BC; Olympia, where the Olympics began in 776 BC; the 8th-century BC site of ancient Corinth where St. Paul preached; the ruins in Mycenae, dating from 1,350 to 1,200 BC; the amazingly well-preserved, 2,300-year-old open-air theater dedicate to the God of Medicine in Epidaurus (UNESCO); Thermopylae, where the battle between the Greeks and Persians took place in 480 BC; Delphi where from 720 BC and 395 AD, Greeks would consulted the Oracle; Patmos, where St. John the Divine wrote the Revelation; Rhodes, with one of Europe's largest medieval towns; as well as Kusadasi (Turkey) and the fascinating Greek, Roman, and Byzantine excavations of Ephesus.

Stunning Scenery
Be captivated as we cross the spectacular Corinth Canal; drive through the magnificent Arcadian Mountains; pass the serene fishing villages of Patras; step back in history to visit the fantastic landscape of Meteora with its 24 rock-top monasteries; and along the scenic coast of Thermopylae. Then we cruise Mykonos, Greece's most famous cosmopolitan island with its seafront village, sandy beaches, and whitewashed houses; Heraklion on Crete, nestled picturesquely between two mountain ranges with archaeological treasures and beautiful scenery; Santorini (weather permitting), still an active volcano offering one of the world's most breathtaking panoramas; on the crystal-clear Aegean Sea.

Unique Experiences
Gain a true sense of Greek culture with a cooking demonstration to learn how to make the traditional Greek tzatziki appetizer. Also enjoy a dance lesson, where you’ll learn how to do the sirtaki, made famous in the movie Zorba the Greek (no worry the Ouzo loosens the spirit). Plus, the opportunity to participate in a variety interactive arts & crafts sessions while on our cruise.

With a special departure (not listed in their catalog) at a fabulous time of the year to explore Greece; an upgraded Athens hotel just minutes from the Plaka (a famous shopping village) and the Acropolis; and a more intimate Aegean cruising ship: my friends at Globus Lugano continue the Dold Family Tradition of Value, Service and Making Travel Dreams Come True. Pray this itinerary appeals to your sense of classical exploration.
