2017 America's Heartland 16 days

with the Lincoln Highway (FIRST HALF)

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 Honolulu Departure.

Our adventure across America's Heartland begins with an overnight departure for the west coast. The preliminary flight schedule is displayed online at doldworldjourneys.com under the journey's page.

Day 2 Arrival in Newark, New Jersey.

Welcome to the "Big Apple!" After a comfortable flight we touch down in Newark in the afternoon and are met and transferred to the Holiday Inn Express Manhattan West Side. The balance of the day is ours to relax and get adjusted and possibly start exploring. Barbara Buryiak, our special tour director, and Alex, our Hawaii host, will be on hand this evening to assist us.

Day 3 Exploring New York City, New York.

New York City is one of the world’s most exciting cities, buzzing with atmosphere and packed with fascinating sights. On today’s sightseeing tour with a local guide, see Times Square, Greenwich Village, Wall Street, and Chinatown. Then, cross over to Brooklyn and enjoy a Pizza Tour. This fun and unique experience will take in many of Brooklyn’s landmarks, including Coney Island and Brighton Beach, movie locations from Saturday Night Fever, Goodfellas, and Moonstruck, and sample some of New York’s finest pizza along the way. This evening is at leisure to explore more of this vibrant city. (L)

Day 4 To Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Our destination today is the “City of Brotherly Love.” Upon arrival, our sightseeing through America’s fifth-largest city includes Love Park; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where we can run the steps like Rocky Balboa; and many of the important buildings of this historic city, the birthplace of the nation. Next up is Penn Museum, considered one of the world’s greatest archaeology and anthropology museums and the largest university museum in the US. For a unique treat, dinner is served at the Historic City Tavern, once host to George Washington, William Penn, and the First Continental Congress. Wyndham Historic District. (D)

Day 5 Via Lancaster to Pittsburgh.

First stop today is Lancaster where we explore the Amish Farm & House. Stroll with a local guide as they explain the faith, culture, and way of life of these people for whom tradition forbids the use of electricity or telephones in the home. Our coach joins the Lincoln Highway as we head Pittsburgh. Get our cameras ready for a stop in Everett to see one of the Lincoln Highway’s “Roadside Giants,” an oversized quarter weighing nearly a ton! Arrive into Pittsburgh in the early evening and spend the next two nights at the Holiday Inn Express.

Day 6 Excursion to Latrobe.

Today we travel to Latrobe to enjoy the Lincoln Highway Experience dedicated to preserving our nation’s first coast-to-coast highway, which marked the birth of popular American tourism. Here we see an orientation film, fun interpretive exhibits, quirky roadside architecture, restored gas pumps, and more! Before heading back to Pittsburgh, view another one of Lincoln Highway’s “Roadside Giants,” a 25 foot high and 4,900 pound replica of a 1940’s Bennett Gas Pump!

Later, experience the Soldiers & Sailor's Memorial Hall & Museum, the nation’s only military memorial dedicated to honoring the men and women of all branches of service, from all generations and conflicts. End our day riding the 139 year-old Duquesne Incline Railway to an observation deck for a spectacular panorama of Pittsburgh and its three rivers.

Day 7 Via Columbus to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Take a break in Columbus for a historic trip back in time to 1861 at the Ohio Statehouse (subject to availability). Here we will hear about the people who built the Ohio Capitol and delight in its unique Greek Revival Architecture. Next spend time exploring German Village, a historic neighborhood settled by German immigrants in the early 19th century. Then continue to Cincinnati and savor a Cincinnati Chili Dinner, a local favorite which I know our Ohana will love. Holiday Inn Riverfront. (D)

Day 8 To Indianapolis, Indiana.

Road signs are a fascinating reflection of America through the years. The Lincoln Highway was known for its signs welcoming tourists and pulling them in for a pit stop in each little town along the way. Our guided tour of the American Sign Museum will bring to life the stories behind the signs and the evolution of signs on the American landscape. In the afternoon learn how the Ohio River Valley was an active site along the passage to freedom at the National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center. Then continue to Indianapolis for our two night stay at the Country Inn & Suites.

Day 9 Discovering Indianapolis.

When in Indianapolis, you got to see the Indianapolis Motor Speedway! On our grounds tour, soak in the atmosphere of the track from the perspective of a driver. Then spend time at the Hall of Fame Museum learning about the history of the track and view a variety of antique cars and race trophies. We end our day at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art ranked among the world’s best collections of contemporary Native art.

Day 10 Via Peoria to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Our heading today is north to rejoin the Lincoln Highway at Cedar Rapids. This will be our longest day on the road as we travel approximately 400 miles. Along the way we pass many small Midwestern towns and enjoy the agricultural scenery. Our lunch break with be in Peoria, home of the famous comedian Richard Pryor and headquarters to Caterpillar, Inc. The world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. Day 11 Via Des Moines to Kansas City, Missouri.

This morning travel to Des Moines, the state capitol of Iowa. Explore the State Capitol Building with its copper-covered domes, works of art, and a collection of war flags. Next we explore Salisbury House & Gardens, a historic house museum featuring a 42-room estate surrounded by nine acres of gardens and woodland. This early 20th century estate was modeled after the King’s House in Salisbury, England and is filled with original furnishings and a rare collection of art and tapestries. Afterwards, head to Kansas City for our two night stay at the Drury Inn.

Day 12 Exploring Kansas City.

Steeped in history, the National World War I Museum & Memorial is the only American museum dedicated to sharing the stories of the Great War through the eyes of those who lived it. This award winning museum houses the largest collection of WWI artifacts in the world and offers a global perspective of the war.

Next up, see the home of all those heartwarming greeting cards you’ve sent over the years with a visit to Hallmark Headquarters. At the visitor’s center, discover where a storied past and an exciting future come to life. Exhibits demonstrate the creativity and innovation that go into making Hallmark products. Later enjoy some leisure time at Crown Center featuring a plethora of unique stores and dinning choices. Tonight we delight in a local favorite, Kansas City Barbeque! (D)

Day 13 To Omaha, Nebraska.

Depart for midday arrival into Omaha, Nebraska’s largest city. Discover Boys Town where a local guide will offer an insider’s perspective on life in the Village. See where the children live, play, work, go to school, and pray. Just west of Boys Town, we travel on the original Lincoln Highway Bricks, laid down in 1920. Then our coach continues into the city where we will have free time to stroll down the cobblestone streets of the Old Market, a downtown shopping, dining, and entertainment district. Omaha is well known for their beef and tonight we'll savor some of it at local steakhouse. Holiday Inn Downtown. (D)

Day 14 Via Kearney to North Platte.

Our first stop is at Kearney, the midpoint of the Lincoln Highway. Spanning 310 feet over Interstate 80, The Archway presents 170 years of America’s westward movement. Immerse ourselves in the sights of Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, and California Trail and hear stories of early pioneers, the transcontinental railroad, and the Pony Express.

This afternoon, we discover The Classic Car Collection with over 210 automobiles. Enjoy an artful perspective of the major role that the automobile has played in our history, culture, industry and innovation, and its relationship to us all. Continue to North Platte for our overnight stay at a Hampton Inn.

Day 15 To Denver, Colorado.

Head back south this morning for a midday arrival into the “Mile High City,Denver. Upon arrival, enjoy an orientation tour and time to explore bustling 16th Street, a pedestrian and transit mall packed with shopping and attractions. This evening, Barbara will host a special farewell dinner. Wonderful conversation and cuisine make the perfect finale for our America's Heartland journey. Sheraton Downtown Denver. (D)

Day 16 To Honolulu.

Our adventure across the eastern portion of Heartland of America comes to a close today as we head for the airport this morning. We leave with a deeper appreciation of our country and its many manmade and natural treasures. At the same time we wonder, "What is in store for the second half?" Our flight arrives home in the afternoon.
