Alex's Notes

Mahalo for your patience while Bobby Chinen (BCT Tours) worked out all the kinks with our hotel confirmations. The difficultly arose because my limited group travel loyalty to Japan, the Chinese are going in huge numbers and it so happens to be around Cherry Blossom time (a fabulous travel time to Japan). Okay while our journey is around the time, I make no promises. It is up to the heavens. All I can say is on past Japan trips our Travel Ohana has been very blessed.

Bobby-san is my Japanese brother and mentor. He has taught me how to spoil our Travel Ohana. His programs are top of the line. This time he truly out did himself. His creativity came up with reverse itinerary to secure hotels and as a bonus made for a better paced itinerary. When finalizing this itinerary the scenic beauty, amazing culture and interesting history of Japan came alive for me. Of course, included are many of Tohoku's must see sights, unique experiences, and four onsen properties.

Must See Sights
Yubatake or "Hot Water Field," a main source for Kusatsu; Matsumotojo, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles; Kakunodate, a former castle town and samurai stronghold; Chusonji (a UNESCO site) with its Golden covered Konjikido Hall; Tsuruga (Wakamatsu) Castle, previously known as Kurokawa Castle; Byakkotai Memorial Hall dedicated to the Aizu soldiers who committed Seppuku or "Harakiri;" Nikko Edomura or "Edo Wonderland" historic theme park built in Edo (1603-1868) style architecture and populated by townspeople in period costume; Tsukiji Outer Market, the largest wholesale market for fish in Tokyo central; Asakusa Sensoji Temple, one of Tokyo's oldest and most popular Buddhist temples; Edo-Tokyo Museum housed in a unique looking building; the list goes on and on...

Unique Experiences
Visit a Daimonya Workshop with a 200-year history of making intricate Daruma (traditional Japanese round wooden dolls) by hand; watch the Yumomi Show, the cooling down the spring water with large wooden paddles while singing folk songs; try our hand at making Soba at the Takagi Workshop; Hydrofoil round trip to Sado Island; ride a Tarai Bune or "Tub Boat" off the coast of Ori; Inaho Limited Express train journey along the Japan's Sea Coast; Lake Tazawa, one of the most scenic spots in the Akita Prefecture; Lake Goshoko on the boarder of Morioka; stunning Genbikei Gorge shaped by the rapid flowing water of the river; Matsushima Bay one of Japan's three most scenic views; and more...

Four Onsen Properties
While I realize some Ohana members abstain from birthday suit bath parties, there are huge benefits with onsen overnights. These properties are superior hotels normally with amazing location, spectacular views and have traditional Japanese characteristics. Best of all are the lavish meals. Breakfast and dinner are always included at onsen properties and tend to be out of this world. Our onsen visits include the Nakazawa Village Hotel (Kusatsu), the Yoshidaya Hotel (Sado Island), Shion Hotel (Tsunagi), and the Rindoko Royal Hotel (Nasu Kogen).

Mahalo to Bobby-san and Ted-san at Nippon Travel Agency for using their amazing talents to make this happen. They continue to extend the Dold Family Tradition of Value, Service and Making Travel Dreams Come True, with this Custom First Class journey including breakfast daily, 6 dinners, full days of sightseeing, special features, onsen hotels, and more. Being a custom program, there are no optional excursions. Pray you will find the itinerary was worth the wait.
