Alex's Notes

Two years ago, after taking the sensational Irrawaddy River cruise I wanted to bring a similar experience to the US. Sadly, since the Globus Family stopped doing them, so I hooked up with longtime friend Helena Novak at Alexander + Roberts for a 2018 Pacific Northwest Columbia & Snake river cruise.

Trying to add spicy and unique to the journey I was asking the cruise line to set up special excursions for our Travel 'Ohana. Their responses took too long, and I ended up pulling plug on 2018 with the hope of doing the next year.

Hooking up with Tim Moulder and his wife Elaine of Brilliant Edventures we began hammering out a quirky and interesting 2019 itinerary. Then in late October (while I was on the spectacular Mekong River Cruise) we were told the cruise line is cancelling all 2019 group space. Travel life has seriously change with the web. Many vendors (including the airlines) prefer individual travelers over groups. Their loss.

This is CUSTOM (NON-GLOBUS Family) Program and the POLICIES and PROCEDURES are DIFFERENT. The itinerary is still amazing!

When Life Give You Lemons
You make a Brilliant Cranberry Lemonade (with a splash of vodka if you wish). When our cruise space was cancelled, I asked Elaine at Brilliant Edventures if she was willing to continue to put up with all me odd request - even got my buddy and travel guru Todd Ney involved as he grew up in the area.

The result was an intriguing exploration of the Pacific Northwest packed with its wild history, magnificent scenery and unique quirkiness. It includes tons of features (way beyond the cruise itinerary) which forced me to go beyond my two-page brochure limit. AND is PRICED thousands less than a cruise. PLUS, two days longer.

Wild History:
The history on this journey come in two parts. The first is the historic discover and development with sights like the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center where we trace the exploration of the two men; learn about the loggers and fishermen of the time at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum; the Whitman Mission and Historical site which played a key role in the westward expansion; and the Northern Pacific Railroad Museum which takes us back in time when railroad were the king of transportation.

Second were the more scientific history which helped people settle in the area. For instance, the Bonneville Lock & Dam which improved navigation on the Columbia River and provided hydropower to the area, the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center where we learn it help preserve the region for future generations; the Gordon House an example of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian vision for America, the Sage Center which highlights sustainable agriculture and energy.

Magnificent Scenery:
The Pacific Northwest is beautiful from the Oregon Coast to Lake Coeur d'Alene and see the the best of it. Experience power and beauty of Multnomah Falls; stunning flora and fauna at both the award-winning International Rose Test Garden and 80-acre Oregon Gardens; the pristine Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area; and, let's not forget the Columbia and Snake Rivers plus much much more...

Unique Quirkiness:
Unique features seem to be a natural for me and the Pacific Northwest has its share. Visit the Cranberry Museum to learn its history and key phases from planting to distribution; stop at the International Kite Museum to view old and new kites from around the world; Ride a professional driven open-top dune buggy; take an Underground Tour and learn about the dark side of Pendleton; explore the Oasis Bordello Museum which housed an active bordello until 1988 plus, plus, plus...

Got Meals
Well if we are replacing a cruise, we needed to add meals and we made them special like breakfast at Cottage Bakery famous for their True Artisan Bread; Beach Bucket lunch on the Oregon Coast; Northwest inspired dinner at Bentley's Grill; Bison Burgers at the ranch in Worley; dinner on a Columbia River Sternwheeler and on a Lake Coeur d'Alene Cruise. Plus, meals at places like the Rooster Country Kitchen, Hamley Steakhouse & Saloon, Heller Bar Lodge, Max at Mirabeau...

Mahalo to Elaine Moulder at Brillant Edventures for using their amazing talents to make this happen. They truly understood my need to spoil our Travel 'Ohana. This program is top of the line and continues the Dold Family Tradition of Value, Service and Making Travel Dreams Come True. This Moderate Custom First Class journey including breakfast daily, 3 lunches, 11 dinners, full days of sightseeing, special features, and more. Being a custom program, there are no optional excursions. Pray this itinerary appeals to your sense for exploration.
