Day by Day Itinerary

This Tour is FULL and on WAITLIST. For questions, please contact alex@doldworldjourneys.com or (808) 732-9430.

Day 1 Honolulu Departure.

Our African Safari adventure begins this afternoon with an overnight flight to Narita Japan. The preliminary flight schedule is ready and displayed online doldworldjourneys.com under the journey's page.

Day 2 Overnight in Bangkok, Thailand.

After a comfortable landing in Japan we quickly transfer to our Bangkok flight. Upon arrival in Bangkok we clear customs / immigration procedures, our met and transfer to an airport hotel for the night.

Day 3 Via Dubai to Nairobi, Kenya.

In the morning we take off for Dubai, UAE where we make a nice connection to Nairobi. Welcome to East Africa! We touch down in Kenya evening. After clearing immigration and customs, we are met by our fabulous Safari Director and transferred to the Serena hotel where we spend our first two nights in Africa.

Day 4 Discovering Nairobi.

Start our day by experiencing the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, founded and managed by Daphne Sheldrick. Here, we'll learn about elephant conservation and meet elephant calves, orphaned by poachers, before they are re-introduced to the wild. Next visit the Karen Blixen Museum, at the foot of the Ngong Hills. This fascinating place is dedicated to the author of Out of Africa. Lastly, stop at the Giraffe Center, a non-profit organization focused on saving the Rothschild’s giraffe, where we receive a better understanding about this sub-species and have the opportunity to feed them. This evening savor a Welcome Dinner at the iconic Carnivore Restaurant known for their nyama choma (BBQ meat). (B), (L), (D)

Day 5 Via Mount Kenya to Samburu National Reserve.

We start our Safari adventure heading north to begin our search for the "Big 5"- lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo. Along the way we stop at the famed Mount Kenya Safari Club for lunch. Savor the stunning views of Mount Kenya, a 17,058-foot dormant volcano with a glistening cap of ice and snow. After lunch we cross the equator and continue to Samburu National Reserve, known for its arid landscape and unique wildlife.

Due to the dry climate, grasses are sparse, making animals easier to spot. Meanwhile, the Ewaso Ng’iro River, which borders the reserve, provides a year-round water supply. These two factors make for a great game-viewing experience. On arrival into the reserve we begin our first Game Drive and have the chance to see rare animals not see in other parts of the country. Commonly referred to as the Samburu Special 5, they include Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx, and the gerenuk, a long-necked antelope that feeds while standing on its hind feet. Sarova Shaba Game Lodge. (B), (L), (D)

Day 6 Exploring Samburu.

A full day of Game Drives includes an outing at dawn, when animals are most active, and the afternoon, when the light is best for photography. On our drive we stay close to the Ewaso Ng'iro River which borders the park and is home to a large population of Nile Crocodile. Other animals that frequent the river include the waterbuck, Grant gazelle and Kirk's dik-dik. Where there is prey, predators can be found, so lion and leopard are often spotted. The park is also a great place for bird-watching, with over 300 species. Between game drives, there’s time to relax at our lodge. During our afternoon game drive, we'll visit a Local Samburu Village to experience their culture and day-to-day life. (B), (L), (D)

Day 7 To Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

After breakfast, we travel to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in all East Africa. After lunch, enjoy a Game Drive in the conservancy, including a stop at the Chimp Sanctuary. In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Jane Goodall Institute, the sanctuary was established to provide a long-term home for orphaned and abused chimpanzees. See the chimps and hear more about their plight. Our overnight is at the Sweetwaters Serena Camp (not like camping at Bellows). (B), (L), (D)

Day 8 Via Nyahururu Falls to Lake Nakuru National Park.

This morning journey through the beautiful Kenyan highlands, one of the most fertile agricultural areas in all of Africa, where farmers grow crops such as corn, wheat, coffee, and tea. We make a stop at the spectacular Thompson's Falls at Nyahururu and then make our way down the eastern escarpment of the magnificent Rift Valley. After lunch take a leisurely Game Drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, once famous for its population of pink flamingos. Keep our eyes out for waterbuck, giraffe, impala, and striped hyena that frequent this area. This is also our best chance to see the White rhinoceros, which are commonly spotted here. Sarova Lion Hill Lodge. (B), (L), (D)

Day 9 To Masai Mara National Reserve.

Today we traverse the Rift Valley and ascend its western rim. We're now in Masai country, where sedentary crop farming gives way to nomadic cattle herding. Red-clad, spear-wielding Masai warriors tend to their multi-colored herd among the wild animals of the Loita Plains, admirably unimpressed by the presence of large predators. On arrival at Masai Mara National Reserve we settled in at the Sarova Mara Camp, our home for the next two nights. (again no worry, not Bellows.) After lunch we set out on an afternoon Game Drive. (B), (L), (D)

Day 10 In Masai Mara.

Rise early for our morning Game Drive followed by a special Bush Breakfast. Sip on a mimosa in Kenya's most famous and scenic game area. "The Mara," as it is called by locals, is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, blessed with a steady water supply, and boasts a strong permanent population of game.

When the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra arrives, generally from August to early November, the population enlarges by almost 2 million. This provides a great food source for predators such as lion, cheetah, leopard, and hyena. Also keep our eyes out for elephant, rhino, giraffe, topi and much more. After some time to relax at our camp we head out for our afternoon Game Drive. (B), (L), (D)

NOTE: While this is one of the best times for the year for The Great Migration, it is a natural event. The arrival/departure of the migrating herds varies slightly year to year.

Day 11 Via Nairobi to Amboseli National Park.

After breakfast we head to the airstrip, where we board a plane for a quick flight to Nairobi. Gain an overview of Africa on our plane ride as we fly over the Rift Valley, part of the rift system that stretches some 19,686 feet from the Dead Sea in the Middle East to Mozambique. After a short break, drive to Amboseli National Park, best known for spectacular views (weather permitting) of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at some 19,341 feet. Embark on a Game Drive before arriving at the Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. (B), (L), (D)

Day 12 Discovering Amboseli National Park.

Today we again have the choice of joining both the morning and/or afternoon Game Drives, our last in Kenya. Amboseli affords us a great opportunity to get close to the mighty elephant. Also, keep on the lookout for Cape buffalo, zebra, wild dogs, and others. A picnic lunch will be served while on our safari. This evening, as the sun sets with “Kili” as the backdrop, savor Sundowner Drinks in the bush! (B), (L), (D)

Day 13 Via Arusha, Tanzania to Lake Manyara National Park.

This morning we motor to the border town of Namanga and meet our Tanzanian driver-guide, every bit as friendly and eagle-eyed as the expert who looked after us in Kenya. Enjoy a lunch break in Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. The town is the exact halfway point between Cairo and Cape Town and set amid coffee plantations at the foot of Mount Meru.

Our destination is Lake Manyara National Park, located at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. This small park is ecologically diverse, with groundwater forests, grassy plains, and the alkaline Lake Manyara itself. We end our day at the Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge with a little leisure time before dinner. (B), (L), (D)

Day 14 Via Tloma to Ngorongoro Crater.

Embark on a morning Game Drive in Lake Manyara National Park. Watch for elephant, Cape buffalo, giraffe, and more. The park is also home to the world’s largest concentration of baboons. Afterward, take in spectacular views of Lake Manyara during a special Bush Lunch.

Then, journey to the nearby village of Tloma. Here, we'll visit a local Family's Home to learn more about the local Iraqw culture and their traditional way of life. Then stop at a local Primary School to visit with the children and learn about the educational system in rural Tanzania.

Continue to the rim of Ngorongoro Crater (Alex's favorite park), which is part of the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Views from the rim are particularly stunning, especially at sunrise and sunset! Our next two nights are at the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge. (B), (L), (D)

Day 15 Experience Ngorongoro.

After breakfast we descend into the crater for a full-day of animal viewing. Ngorongoro Crater is technically the world's largest unflooded caldera. It is over 2,000 feet below the rim, has a floor covering over 102 square miles, and hosts an unbelievable variety and density of wildlife. Game viewing here is fantastic, as most of the animals stay in this area year-round. We can see the lion, Cape buffalo, hippo, elephant, zebra, and flamingo. This is also our best chance to see the rare Black rhinoceros. A picnic lunch will be served in the crater. (B), (L), (D)

Day 16 To Serengeti National Park.

One of the major highlights of this Safari is our exploration of Serengeti National Park. Today we drive to the Serengeti, Tanzania’s largest and most famous park. Home to the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra. The park attracts visitors from around the world. We savor lunch at our lodge before an afternoon Game Drive. Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp (again no worry, not Bellows). (B), (L), (D)

Day 17 In the Serengeti.

It was 1913 and great stretches of Africa were still unknown to the white man when Stewart Edward White, an American hunter, set out from Nairobi. Pushing south, he recorded: "We walked for miles over burnt out country... Then I saw the green trees of the river, walked two miles more and found myself in paradise." The Serengeti covers an area of roughly 5,700 square miles. The name comes from the Maasai word siringit, meaning “endless plains.”

There is best way to delight in the Serengeti is with both a morning and afternoon Game Drives. We'll have the chance to see the big cats—lion, leopard, and cheetah—as well as an abundance of other animals, including the Nile crocodile, giraffe, gazelle, and eland. Tonight, savor a Farewell Bush Dinner and Traditional Masai Dance Performance—the perfect end to our safari adventure! (B), (L), (D)

Day 18 To Arusha for our Journey Home.

This morning we fly back to Arusha, where we say goodbye to our Tanzanian Safari team. We all have dayrooms to relax before our evening flight to Dubai, UAE. (B)

Day 19 On our way home.

Early morning landing in Dubai with a comfortable connection to our Bangkok flight. Upon arrival in Thailand we clear customs / immigration procedures, our met and transfer to an airport hotel for the night..

Day 20 To Honolulu.

Wonderful memories of a once-in-a-lifetime safari adventure are with us on our morning flight via Narita, Japan to Hawaii. Our landing in Honolulu is scheduled for the morning.
